A think tank for PIE’s programs and initiatives

John Abner

John Abner is former Executive Director of Cengage Learning, a content design and development organization. John earned both his B.S. and M.A. in History from Indiana State University. For the past 20 years, he has worked to provide both national and global leadership in overseeing higher education product development and new process ideation. He spearheaded metadata standards development in alignment with higher education accreditation guidelines supporting analytics generation and assessment benchmarks. “I love the challenges students experience as they are presented with an open-ended case. There aren’t any easy answers to these PIE cases: it’s a real life scenario that business and community leaders asked out students to solve. This allows students to think, process the quantitative data, develop solutions and present their ideas to executive mentors. We don’t have enough content that drives this “active learning” process pivotal for success in the 21st century workplace. I’m so excited to join an organization that is using this method in the K-12 classroom.”

Hank Alexander

Hank Alexander is a partner with Graydon Head & Ritchey LLP. He is Chair of the Firm’s Tax Practice Group, where he works extensively in the federal income and corporate tax areas. Hank earned his B.A. and J.D. from the University of Cincinnati, and he has been named a Cincy Leading Lawyer from 2008-2015. An avid trombonist since grade school, Hank enjoys seeing how combining math and music offers kids a chance to work together and create a polished stream of sound. With an extensive background in advising tax-exempt organizations, Hank joined PIE because he “has a keen sense of the good feeling that comes with being part of something larger than himself.”

Dorothy Battle

Dorothy Battle is an Academic Researcher with the University of Cincinnati Kettering Foundation, where her research focuses on local level democracy. Dorothy earned her B.A. and M.Ed. in History and Secondary Educational Administration from Xavier University, and her Ph.D. in Educational Leadership from Miami University. A former high school principal with Cincinnati Public Schools, Dorothy is an active volunteer board member of High Schools That Work (HSTW) Southwest Ohio. Dorothy was one of the charter board members and became involved in the earliest stages because she saw “PIE as an innovative means for using a combination of resources to create authentic learning opportunities that focus on technology, critical thinking and problem solving.”

Jackie Baumgartner

The Development Director for Tender Mercies, Jackie Baumgartner specializes in grant-writing, fundraising, and developing annual reports for non-profit organizations. An active member of the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP), Jackie received her B.S.B.A. from the University of Delaware with a concentration in marketing. She is an active volunteer in the community, including working with St. Mary Church, Healthy Roots Foundation and the Madisonville Education and Assistance Center (MEAC). “I was drawn to PIE because it was an opportunity to further my professional skills, learn something new and be a part of a unique program to help shape the future of education,” Jackie comments.

Eve Bolton

A retired 36-year veteran social studies and theater teacher at Wyoming High School, Eve Bolton is currently serving her second four-year term on the Cincinnati Public Schools Board of Education and serving as President. Previously, Eve was President of the Wyoming Education Association, a member of the Mt. Healthy City Council, and elected as the Hamilton County Recorder. She also volunteers as the President of College Hill Urban Community Redevelopment Corporation. “Beyond the years of teaching in Ohio’s most successful and top ranked school district, my experience in neighborhood development and political office has allowed me to understand the connection between successful schools and vibrant communities,” Bolton explains “As an elected school board member of Ohio’s top ranked urban district, I appreciate the need for cutting edge structural reform and innovative instructional experimentation.”

Tom Callinan

Tom Callinan is the Founder of Charitable Words Scholars, a 501(c)3 organization connecting nonprofits with students and recent grads who are interested in learning by doing. This evolved from a journalism career that spanned more than 30 years with Gannett, including roles as Editor and Vice President of The Cincinnati Enquirer. Tom received his B.A. in English from St. Cloud University and his M.S. in Applied Science and Technology from Rochester Institute of Technology. His involvement with the community has been extensive, including teaching at Arizona State School of Journalism, Michigan State University, the University of California/Berkeley Summer Program, and the University of Cincinnati. Tom added that he was honored to join the Board because “it so closely aligned with his interest and passions for developing ‘hands on’ learning among a range of students from middle school to college.”

Marilyn Brown Clark

Marilyn Clark is Vice President of CommuniSkills specializing in communications training for clients including: Procter & Gamble, General Electric, Universal Studios, Shriner’s Burns Institute, The Girl Scouts of America, AT&T, LensCrafters, Allstate Insurance and AK Steel. Additionally, she has taught English as an adjunct professor at Xavier University for more than 10 years, and in the MBA program of Xavier’s Williams College of Business. A graduate of Indiana University (Indianapolis), she earned her master’s degree at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Clark supports PIE through development efforts and by facilitating connections with Xavier, including recruiting student interns. “With universities so committed to better prepare middle and high school students for college and successful careers, it was a natural fit for me to join the PIE Board of Directors.”

Dorothy Corbett

Dorothy Corbett serves as Vice President, Law, for the Energy, Sterilmed and Sedasys Business Divisions of Johnson & Johnson. She was formerly Associate General Counsel for Duke Energy, Inc. Before that, Dorothy was in private practice in Cincinnati law firms for almost 10 years. She has volunteered as a truancy mediator in Cincinnati Public Schools and also through the Junior League of Cincinnati at the former Washington Park Elementary. Dorothy received her A.B. from Harvard University and her J.D. from Georgetown University. “I’m a parent who really wants the best for all kids. PIE offers something that so few organizations can,” she says. “Their programs immediately show increased academic achievement and experiential learning using a method we used at Harvard University! I loved learning using the case method: it’s relevant, it’s real and I get to ‘own’ the answer. As a Board Member, my aim is to get this dynamic tool into our K-12 classrooms.”

Tim Ferguson

Tim Ferguson is Chief Information Officer of Northern Kentucky University and Executive Director of the Center for Applied Informatics (CAI). The CAI provides research about emerging technologies leveraging experiential learning with the best talent possible within the College of Informatics. Tim earned his Computer Science and Mathematics degree from NKU graduating Summa Cum Laude. “PIE was the first K-12 organization we worked with to develop apps in the classrooms. As a Board Member, I am committed to continuing this STEM learning and informatics development with School Districts across the nation.”

Dave Hatter, PMP

A business technologist with more than 20 years experience, Dave Hatter is currently Mayor of Forth Mitchell, KY and a Solution Architect/Partner at Definity Partners. He teaches a variety of innovative, technical courses at Cincinnati State Technical and Community College using a hands-on approach for students. He just ended his 8th term on the City of Fort Wright City Council, and routinely writes business technology articles for more than 100 local and national publications. Dave served as a Staff Sergeant while earning his B.S. from Northern Kentucky University. His community involvement includes board membership of the Cincinnati Better Business Bureau, Northern Kentucky Chamber of Commerce, Cincinnati State Get Skills to Work Advisory Board, Parish Kitchen, and Northern Kentucky e-zone. He is a member of the Northern Kentucky University Alumni Council. “It’s a proven fact that our nation must attract more students to follow STEM career pathways, offering higher salaries, greater regional economic development and enhanced job satisfaction. We don’t have enough students to fill all the STEM jobs currently available! My aim as a Board Member is to continue developing programs that will energize kids to get more involved in these subjects and explore STEM careers.”

Jennifer Horvath

After a 19 successful years with Procter & Gamble in finance and accounting, Jennifer Horvath decided to pursue her passion in the arts. She is currently an Administration Intern at the Taft Museum of Art while completing her master’s degree in Art History and Arts Administration at the University of Cincinnati College of Design, Architecture, Art and Planning (DAAP). She received her B.S. in Finance and Management from the University of Virginia and completed Sotheby’s Art Institute’s program. “I served as a liaison to PIE during their first Straight A Fund deployment with Taft and Cincinnati Public Schools. I was thrilled to join their Board, and marry the joys of art with the exploration of STEM concepts. After all, artists are engineers and scientists too!”

Mary Beth Reuter

Mary Beth Reuter is an attorney with specific expertise in contract law, health care and government regulation; she has been a consultant and contract attorney for corporate law partnerships and Fortune 100 companies. Mary Beth received her B.A. from the University of Georgia and her Juris Doctorate – Honors from Notre Dame Law School. She received a Masters of Health Services Administration from Xavier University. As a mother of five, Mary Beth joined the PIE Board of Directors after she saw the effects of a PIE program in her children’s school. “I want to extend the learning that my kids were so fortunate to receive,” she says. “We have such a powerful tool here, and it’s our responsibility to extend these career and learning opportunities to every School District and their STEM educators. We can help mold the future of so many children.”

Frank Schlueter

Frank Schlueter, M.D. serves as a Diagnostic and Interventional Radiologist at Medical X-Ray Inc. located in Cincinnati, Ohio. Dr. Schlueter is a partner with the Good Samaritan Hospital, TriHealth radiology team. Voted one of Cincinnati’s “Top Doctors” every year since 2010, he has served in all Board executive functions for the Greater Cincinnati Radiological Society. Dr. Schlueter received a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Notre Dame and his medical degree from the University of Cincinnati. He completed residency and fellowship training at the Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology at the Barnes Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri. “I am an engineer – the human body is one big machine,” he noted. “Physicians and engineers learn by using ‘hands on’ experiential and diagnostic methods. I want to share that type of learning in the classroom – especially for kids who think they want to explore STEM careers. PIE a great introduction to medical, engineering, and scientific career pathways.”

Kathleen Ware

Retired president of the Mayerson Academy and assistant superintendent with Cincinnati Public Schools, Kathleen Ware brings over 25 years of experience in education management experience to PIE. Her interests, experience and skills aid PIE in developing new educator professional development content models, new curriculum standards management, and an opportunity to inject active learning pedagogy into classrooms across the nation. Kathleen received her B.A. from the College of Mount St. Joseph, and her Masters of Education from Xavier University. “I became involved with PIE when it first launched as an organization. I offered our learning spaces at Mayerson to PIE as they sponsored a conference featuring the Ohio Department of Education Superintendent and the former Governor of Massachusetts. Since then, I’ve participated in PIE programs and partnered with them on their Straight A Ohio Department of Education Grant. It’s such a joy to sit on the Board and drive sustainable growth and energy into their programs. I love it!”

Carrie Wendel

A third grade teacher at Kilgour Elementary School, Carrie Wendel worked as a Teaching Consultant to PIE to help develop and launch cutting-edge curriculum for the classroom portion of the Straight A grant in 11 Cincinnati Public elementary schools. Her B.A. in Social Work from the University of Cincinnati and M.A. in Inclusive Early Childhood Education from the College of Mount St. Joseph helped prepare her for the STEM project. “I worked with administrators and teachers to develop engaging plans for this project,” she explains. “I am extremely excited to step up to the board level to continue to work with PIE as the organization expands in scope and size.”

Peg Wyant

As the first highest ranking woman at the Procter & Gamble Company, Peg Wyant developed P&G’s strategic planning and acquisition group and helped lead the Company into new business areas, notably beauty and healthcare, and new approaches such as acquisition, divestitures, and global planning. In 1999, she founded Isabella Capital, one of the first and most successful venture firms targeted to invest in women-led companies. Peg also founded and serves as CEO at Grandin Properties, a real estate management and development company focusing on urban, walkable neighborhoods. Peg holds a B.A. from Smith College, where she graduated magna cum laude. She is a YWCA Career Woman of Achievement recipient and an honoree of Speaking of Women’s Health. “I support organizations that are innovative, and I’m always thinking of ways to create ‘young’ entrepreneurs in schools. In school, we don’t typically enter a classroom and show educators successful methods that ‘seed’ innovation. PIE offers so many windows to creating new learning opportunities in collaboration with business, arts, and nonprofit organizations. Even I’m learning new things!”
